So off up North went the Horsplay Syndicate, to the Newlands Farm Stables of Stuart Crawford, who (because you're a very well behaved reader), you've already read about on a previous page on this marvellous site. At this point of proceedings not only did we change stables but we also changed the sex of our horses! (Not by magic I should add), but by Stuart going to the August Sales at Fairyhouse and for less magic beans than usual, coming back with a bay filly by Shantou and a mother whose kids had also shown an ability to know where the winning post was.
Named Our Valentina because, well sometimes syndicate democracy just works that way, but known in dispatches to her fan club as R.V, Stuart felt we had a nice raw prospect on our hands, who over time might have a race or two in her. That said there was still some time to go before getting to that point in her young racing career and so the immediate plan was simply to introduce RV to the racecourse and hope she liked what she saw...
But this is the sport of racing...so naturally things weren't that straightforward! Another trip on the rollercoaster of racehorse ownership awaited us all....
A glorious summer evening, a solid but not spectacular list of competitors and Down Royal Racecourse full of optimistic Horsplay Syndicate members....what could go wrong? Well Our Valentina, obviously aware of how debuts had panned out for our horses to date, decided to raise (or more accurately lower) the bar even further by falling in a
A glorious summer evening, a solid but not spectacular list of competitors and Down Royal Racecourse full of optimistic Horsplay Syndicate members....what could go wrong? Well Our Valentina, obviously aware of how debuts had panned out for our horses to date, decided to raise (or more accurately lower) the bar even further by falling in a flat race....Yes, when beginning to threaten the leaders with less than half a mile to go, our girl, while trying to do her best impression of a camel threading herself through the eye of a needle became intimately acquainted with Planet Earth, leaving a lot of worried faces looking nervously for signs it was no more than an unfortunate slip.
Thankfully, that proved to be the case and in reality, we actually had a lot of positives to take out of the section of the race where RV had decided to use all four of her hooves as had indeed nature intended. Therefore the Horsplay Syndicate headed into the winter of 2016/17 knowing we had a horse with a splash of talent and a couple of dashes of potential too! While Stuart still placed Our Valentina in 3 more flat races in the hope he could take advantage of running amongst her own sex and against less experienced rivals, it would be hurdles where she would excel in due course!
While it's fair to say that Our Valentina wasn't necessarily the most natural of jumpers when it came to hurdles, what she lacked in technique, she clearly made up for in tenacity. In 3 runs over hurdles, she had already displayed a real fighting spirit at the business end of her races and so by the time she lined up for an EBF Mares Maid
While it's fair to say that Our Valentina wasn't necessarily the most natural of jumpers when it came to hurdles, what she lacked in technique, she clearly made up for in tenacity. In 3 runs over hurdles, she had already displayed a real fighting spirit at the business end of her races and so by the time she lined up for an EBF Mares Maiden Hurdle at Navan in April 2017, she had already proved herself to be a hardy little madam!
With Gold Cup winning jockey Paul Townend aboard, Our Valentina produced a brilliantly resilient performance, coming through the field in the latter stages and just getting up on the post to claim her maiden victory and a tidy pot for the Horsplay Syndicate to boot!
6 months later, we saw another fighting performance to capture the inaugural Mares Northern Lights Hurdle Final (and several more magic beans for the syndicate's kitty), this time at Carlisle.
But just as the future looked incredibly exciting for Our Valentina, fate intervened again. Though racing with distinction again at the Scottish Grand National Festival, a back injury curtailed her racing career, meaning it was an early trip to the breeding shed and as you can see from her gallery below, foaling a healthy filly by Court Cave!
Here we have RV just doing some Syndicate Promotional Work when she first arrived at Newlands Farm...as you can see she was a very well put together mare and while it's rude to talk about a lady's weight, she certainly had a lot of condition to work with on the gallops which is always a good quality early in the training process.
Stuart, who quite frankly is like a moth to flame when it comes to the camera, insisted he led her around and that we filmed him from his best side. Sometimes it's hard work as owners dealing with the constant demands for attention of a trainer, but we just view it as part of the job...
Before you click on the Gallery tab above, here's a bonus video of Our Valentina in action in a maiden hurdle at Ayr Racecourse!
Taking a while for the penny to drop she stays on stoutly on her hurdling debut leaving us a happy bunch of syndicators!
RV's ability to happily respond to her riders urgings a the business end of races evident here.,was seen again @ Navan & Carlisle later that year.
Tipped by BBC Radio 4's Sports Newsdesk that very morning given the race in question fell on Valentine's Day, love truely was in the air.......at ...Ayr....!
"Dear owners, shareholders and those far and wide
Word reaches my stable of hearts filled with pride....
So I write you this poem, though I can't see your faces
To recall for you all, my last trip to the races....
Yes during last week, folks were wondering why
My syndicates members looked up to the sky
The answer was simple, as while I was training
Those paying my rent were concerned it was raining
As in 6 runs to date (and I'm just being fair)
I had shown my best form while on soft ground at Ayr
Therefore keen racing students had all clearly found
That I wasn't a fan of true deep, winter ground
As the showers came and went, while we passed through the week
My chances of victory began to look bleak
Although still unsure if I should take my place....
Stuart said "Our Valentina, I think you should race!"....
So to Navan I went, with rain still in the air,
With Stuart still convinced I'm a talented mare
(Although being honest, he told me quite cleary
No matter the outcome, he'd still love me dearly)
As I walked round the paddock, t'was easy to see
The eyes of the public were all trained on me
A 4/1 favourite, the form in the book
A talented jockey, where else would they look?
My syndicate nervous, their heart rates increasing
Which for 2 miles of hurdles, would not be decreasing
(The same went for those who risked fiscal exposure
Had I not returned to the winners enclosure)....
So up went the tape yet my jump at the first
Could well be regarded as one of my worst
The same at the second and then at the third
(To talk now of victory seemed wholly absurd)
Jeremy's Joy had a 15 length lead
With Kiln Rock and Transwood displaying good speed
But as for yours truly, each jump wasn't pretty
Yet I still wished to add to my syndicates kitty....
So on I continued, just hacking around
And all the while hating the deep winter ground
Yet 3 jumps from home and beyond comprehension
Paul Townend was shouting, "we're still in contention!!"
The 5 horses with with me, were seemingly cruising
(Yet in less than 2 furlongs they'd find themselves losing)
So when 4 fatigued as they all jumped the last
It was just Riene de Pres who was galloping fast...
I'd found myself second, but could I diminish
The gap on the leader approaching the finish??
Well two taps from Paul in the form he was in
Were combined with my legendary willpower to win!
(In addition my horsepower is greater than most
So I captured the lead, 20 yards from the post!).....
My trainer in heaven, my jockey elated
My owners ecstatic, the bookies deflated
I returned to the paddock, applause filled the air
(Which given my effort, appeared more than fair)...
Then photos were taken and quotes passed around
And I told those who'd listen, I'd hated the ground.....
Paul also conveyed I began to feel stronger
The more ground I covered, so felt I'd need longer
But whatever the future, we'll still have that day
And we'll still trust in Stuart as his judgments ok....
Yes being a racehorse, is a great job to do
(When I know, I have owners, as loyal as you)....
So please watch the replay and there you will see
A Mare's Hurdle Winner, you all call... R.V!!!
Staurt getting RV to eat out of his hand...(much like we still do as it happens)....
