So by now I'm hoping as humble but dashing readers you could indeed write this initial 'meet our new horse' paragraph. However as you've done incredibly to stick with things to this point and certainly deserve both a polo mint and possibly even a carrot, I'll save you the trouble and crack on....
Our route to acquiring Roxanya, another name plucked from, (well best not to go there in the interests of Syndicate harmony), was a slightly different one to our previous horses in that she was a purchase from the stud who had bought Our Valentina from us. Roxanya was a daughter of newcomer to the stallion ranks, Leading Light, (a Classic winner in 2013), who had displayed a tough and hardy attitude during his own racing career under the guidance of master flat trainer Aiden O'Brien. While too soon to see the results of his other progeny we were happy to speculate on his success as a sire. (It's a game of chance after all, so the dice was rolled and we had horse #6!)
Roxanya was certainly well put together and after Stuart's seal of approval, she took a trip up the N1 and found herself in Larne.
One distinct advantage of owning our first chestnut coloured filly with a huge white blaize on her face and one white sock, was that syndicate members would never have to ask their trainer that awkward question when walking round the stables of ,'which one's our horse?!'.....
And so Roxanya's introduction into the yard continued apace and

And so Roxanya's introduction into the yard continued apace and while not being asked a great deal in her work, what she did do was spot on and she certainly did not look out of place amongst Stuart's batch of other 3 year old recruits.
Within a couple of months therefore, a trip to Leopardstown for a gallop after racing soon confirmed to Stuart that getting a run into Roxanya before a long summer break would work well. Stuart has often found these 'away days' for horses are often a really useful way of preparing a horse for the change of environment and atmosphere that running under rules at the racecourse will provide. And with all three of our horses he has trained, it's this type of exercise that gives the biggest indication that they are ready to see the track for the first time.

As fate would have it the corresponding race on the previous year's card saw Zhenya perform with such distinction and now in even heavier ground we had the first opportunity to see Roxanya race in Horsplay Syndicate colours.
In conditions that would have had most ducks reaching for their waterproofs, Roxanya travelled perfectly respectably for around a mile and a half of the two mile trip, before becoming detached from the leading pack and under a lovely sympathetic ride being allowed to canter home in her own time.
Not disgraced by any means and a happy horse in the days that followed, Roxanya left for her holidays, delightfully oblivious to the goings on in the world around her. Her syndicate too could be content in knowing they had a horse who could only improve with the sun on her back and some fresh summer grass in her belly.

Here (c/o Stuart) , is a brief reaction of what JJ thought post-race in which what he did say was certainly encouraging and the most pertinent comment I thought was about Roxanya "deserving to have her day soon".... And rather than referring to a couple of hours at a Health Spa near Comber with limitless packets of Polo Mints, was more a reference to given her fall on hurdles debut when looking the likely winner and then running into a hot-pot today, she's certainly more than capable of winning a maiden hurdle when the opportunity presents itself....So JJ can now officially leave the naughty corner and is welcome to The Syndicate Christmas Party with open arms....
A clip that encapsulates the highs and lows of horseracing! Despite being no more than a lively outsider @ 25/1,on her first try over hurdles, Roxanya produced one hack of a performance.....for 2 miles and just over 1 furlong....sadly she chose not to be part of the final 300 yards or experience the delights of the final hurdle. There's a full report/review available in the news update section, but suffice to say the main thing is she' emerged unscathed, as did JJ, and we look forward to the next time thankfully!
Without any owners allowed on course, here we have Stuart multi-tasking in the paddock with a quick video of Roxanya in warm up mode @ Limerick. It's fair to say that what transpired over the next 15 minutes was certainly not dull! Fire over to the News Update section to have a read of the full review or maybe even click above to see the events as they happened!
A quick debrief here from James Bowen after Roxanya's 3rd place @ Musselbrugh. Given she was sent of the Even money favourite, first reactions may have been tinged with a shade of disappointment but on review as James says, over the shortest trip she'll ever run, Roxanya basically just told us all what already knew...that she's got a lovely cruising speed but not a massive change of pace over 2 miles. James' view that she'll be better over further with some jumps in the way is definitely one we can all get on board with.
Another race, another jockey for Roxanya! Not to accuse our girl of being promiscuous, but she once again had a new pilot on board for a 4-6 Year Old Open Bumper over 2 miles on a cold winters day at Sedgefield Racecourse in the North East of England and in this occasion, Dougie Costello did the honours.... Dougie, better known for his exploits on the flat. gave Roxy a brilliant ride, keeping her out of the worst ground as much as possible and still educating her at the business end of proceedings. Another step forward certainly and grounds for optimism moving forward....read the full report in the News Section! (The interviewer is also highly likely to be nominated for the Racing Journalist of the Year apparently.....).....
With a full report for your considered perusal in the wonderfully named 'News Update' section, all we have for you to view here is partial footage of Roxanya on her way to a really encouraging second place in her third race at Sedgefield. In ground conditions that were far from ideal we certainly saw a personal best performance from our heroine! Syndicate, meet Brian, Brian meet the Syndicate. Brian is is the current champion jockey and so it was great to get his considered opinion of Roxy. ..And with introductions duly completed, I'll let Mr. Hughes take it from here and let him talk you through how he assessed his ride on Roxanya and his thoughts on her future. (A word of note...while the googles on his hat appear to be black in colour they are actually rose-tinted).....
Here we see (and with her big white face she's hard to miss) Roxanya mid race in her run at Musselburgh. Under a patient and educational from Champion Jockey, Brian Hughes, she held a lovely position during most of the race and travelled pleasingly well, so much so that she appeared to be going better than any of her rivals heading into the final 3 furlongs. As things panned out however, she ran out of petrol in the closing stages and was certainly not given a hard time in the last 100yards.
Initial musings from our jockey was that she would come on a bundle for the re-appearance and she would hopefully be threatening the winners enclosure in due course, but don't just take my word for it, you can listen to what the man himself had to say above!
So here we see Roxanya heading out to battle in her second ever racecourse appearance. After virtually swimming around the paddock on debut @ Down Royal, Roxy at least was able to see the ground she was walking around on....That said, she still took a little exception to the rather overpowering smell of Covid-Enforced disinfectant that was sprayed generously around her saddling box and so was a little bit jittery and on her toes until she finally consented to getting her number cloth fitted! Definitely looking a stronger more toned filly and after an absence from the racecourse of over half a year, on better ground in the cold crisp Scottish afternoon air, Roxanya headed out to take her place in the:
racingtv.com Mares' Maiden Open National Hunt Flat Race!
4 weeks after her holidays, here we see Roxanya getting back into some more strenuous work. 3 times up this particular gallop is a tested method of assessing her fitness. (After doing so, Ben, her work rider here, swaps places and carries Roxanya up the hill 3 times as well)....
Now isn't this a little bit more like it? A video that not only shows Roxanya's impressive development 3 months after joining the yard but also manages to cut out Stuart's head from shot?!!!
In all seriousness though, this footage illustrates the great attention to detail that Stuart gives to all horses in the yard and how getting them into good habits from Day One can only be of benefit to them in the long run.
Structure is crucial for any horses development and so repetition of this warm up routine builds up the confidence and trust of a racehorse in their rider. Plus it looks great fun too!
Ever wondered how a horse learns to jump? Do they read a manual or talk to other horses in the yard about how they do it?....Well as it turns out they actual begin the process with logs and poles and build up very very gently.
Here we see Roxanya literally taking her first hop over a pole, something that will be repeated time after time to keep her relaxed and lose any anxiety about approaching an obstacle.
Stuart's own technique over the same pole is however a little too scratchy to offer any hope and so we decided not to enter him for the 2021 Grand National after reviewing the footage....
Roxanya and Zhenya having a catch up on the gallops
